Sheridan Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 I've got a chromebook thats stuck on the 'ChromeOS is missing or damaged' screen, so I've downloaded the matching image from Google and used their Chrome app to create the USB recovery drive It recognises the USB, verifies it and proceeds to the point where it asks you to remove all connected devices (USb etc) to continue with recovery - at this point when I remove the USB it goes straight back to the 'ChromeOS is missing or damaged' screen Is this just a chromebook for the recycling or has anyone found a way around this? Its an Asus C300 model
RLR Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 (edited) Are you using the Chromebook utility tool? I never had any luck with this and found another way. You can download this recovery file: https://dl.google.com/dl/edgedl/chromeos/recovery/recovery.conf Open it in notepad and search for your model and download the zip. Asus Chromebook C300 chromeos is https://dl.google.com/dl/edgedl/chromeos/recovery/chromeos_12239.92.0_quawks_recovery_stable-channel_mp-v3.bin.zip Extract the .bin file and you can then use win32diskimager to create a bootable drive. paulkerton Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 That's the MMC croaked I believe. I think its soldered onto the motherboard with the Asus C300, so I don't think its user serviceable. 1
TronXP Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 When we see this it us usually broken, engineers generally come and replace the mainboards. If the board is ok, I have heard of some people having success from making a recovery file from another Chromebook of the same make\model, never worked for us. 1
dmj Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 I'm pretty sure it's the storage chip. It is possible to change surface mount chips with a hotair station but I doubt it would be worth it for a one off. 1
Sheridan Posted September 14, 2020 Author Posted September 14, 2020 I’ll try the other method suggested but I’m expecting it to be a bin job, as it’s not worth any expense to repair
Sheridan Posted September 15, 2020 Author Posted September 15, 2020 Tried a few things but it always ends up the same, I guess the fault is onboard! Cheers for the tips - I just hate throwing away stuff without trying a few fixes first!
