Hello all, 1st post so hopefully a good one. :)

Been an IT manager now for 20 years, but have recently just moved jobs to a new college and they have Ruckus SZ100 and 80+ AP's with a Smoothwall S14. Smoothwall is not new to me as I have come across it before when I used to help at an academy, and firewalls are a thing I have been using since Sun had firewall 1st on it (pre millennium bug lol).

The thing is the RADIUS or AD authentication and Cloudpath servers seem to be fighting each other, and then there is the Smoothwall box which also needs to know who the user is.

I have been battling with it now for ages, and it just doesn't seem to want to play. No one on site here has any real understanding of it, and the many VLANs here (literally one per classroom / office) is not aiding the problem!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to set these up, RADIUS or AD ? Smoothwall or Ruckus Auth or Cloudpath or indeed NPS, and how to pass the authentication results to each link in the chain?

Any pointers to good guides or reading would be appreciated, tried the manuals but they only talk about there own specific pieces, not the big picture!

Thanks

First of all, get rid of the VLANS, that sounds like a crazy setup.

Keep things simple and start from the beginning, test the Radius server with a test app, then test it against the transmitter. If all else fails just use a transparent proxy on the smoothwall, thats what we do.

Ruckus and Smoothwall RADIUS working fine here. The only thing to bear in mind is that the Ruckus authentication test doesn't work, so you have to test with a device, not their built in test.

Can't remember what I used but happy to go over my settings.

SmartZone controllers have to have the APs as Authorized RADIUS clients. So make sure you have both in there and that the shared secret is the same. Start with all clients enabled for ease but you can use Smoothwall groups as deciders if they get Wifi or not.

The Ruckus side is pretty straight forward.

That would be a great help, thanks. If you could give me a rundown of the settings for both ruckus and Smoothwall, that would be an immense help :)
