bjantke Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Hi, In South Australian Schools we use McAfee Web Gateway for filtering, has anyone been able to unblock Steam and EPIC games, we are starting an egaming subject. I have entered the domains https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=8571-GLVN-8711 can connect and download games, but cannot load or play them any feedback would be great
elsiegee40 Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Why would you want to unblock unless you’re a student? We spend our entire time trying to keep the students learning. Few of the games you download from these sites would be licensed for a school network
aicrd Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Personally, I'd never unblock access to Steam or Epic Games but would setup a caching server. This is what I did a few months back at a LAN party to reduce network bandwidth. We used Lancache.NET. Fairly easy to setup in a Docker container and would allow you to download the games to a local server to serve out to the network so then effectively only "Approved" games can be played and clients won't be using up all your bandwidth trying to download games. As for licencing, everyone who plays the games would need to purchase it themselves. It would work the same way LAN gaming centres do. Steam does have a volume licencing program where you can purchase site licences for games but I'd imagine that would be pretty expensive.

They want to allow gaming (for various reasons) but are restricted by an unhelpful government department.
