We are currently teaching online our 7-12 school in Melbourne of about 920 students. We use Meet for all our classes and meetings, and for the most part it is going well, with teachers and students all working from home.

However, we do have the situation where occasionally a user joins a Meet but are immediately kicked off. Sometimes they click/join/get ejected multiple times and can never join, and sometimes the do manage to get on. Sometimes this lasts for an entire afternoon then seems to resolve itself.

This seems completely random - we can't determine anything about the user, the Meet, the browser, the extensions. We've tried upgrading OS/disabling all extensions, different browsers etc.

The one constant is that it occurs on a Mac (we are a Mac school).

Anyone have any ideas, or have experienced something similar?

Not many in Australia here so you might struggle to get a quick response.

Its been 18 months since I used G Suite so there might not be much there but is there anything in the logs found in the admin console?

Is this the same single user or is it random across different users?

Cheers

I know it'll be tomorrow for a response. it does seem to be random across different users, which is why its such a weird problem. I'm wondering if it's an issue with home routers/ISP as there seems to be nothing our send to distinguish between users.

Do you know if hangouts uses any non standard ports?

We have issues when Telstra NBN connections failover to 4G backup. Most of the ports appear to be blocked on 4G backup and for us it means VPN stops working for these people. Maybe a similar issue?

in addition to RDK's post (we work at the same school)

the user we were testing with in the last couple of days had trouble using her iMac and MacBook Air, but using her iphone (connected to the same wifi) worked every time.

today after Aprox 5 attempts to join the same meeting, she got in using the Macbook air.

thanks for your reply guys, she is using Aussie broadband at home (as am I) but this problem didn't go away when she tethered her mobile phone (Vodafone)

We used Google meets all the way through lockdown until we closed for summer. As all our senior school students have a Chromebook, we had few issues other than some funny business with Sky broadbands "Shield" product which seemed to block a lot of Google traffic unless it was set on 18+ settings. At our Junior school though as kids were using any old device their parents had, most of the issues were with Apple devices. Making sure the devices and browsers were all up to date seemed to fix some, others we just couldn't get to work.
