Sub grand server for website?

I have been asked to order a server to host our school web site.

I am thinking of running xampp on windows 2003.

 

SO I would need backups, probably tape drive, and disk mirroring as RAID 5 would probably be overkill for the webserver.

 

Can anyone suggest anything?

Might as well use Apache/MySQL/PHP on Linux instead - save having to buy Windows. Ubuntu will do a LAMP install right at the start when you install it from CD.

Use the mirrored disk as a backup - get hot-swap drive caddies and a RAID controller that can handle rebuilding RAID-1 arrays if you simply yank a drive out and replace it with a fresh one.

I have never run a web server on linux, is it pretty straight forward?

 

I need the site up and running as soon as possible, would I be better sticking with windows server, as I wouldn't know how to use backup on ubuntu?

I keep banging on about the HP server with quad core processors cause they are cheap and great at £350.

 

Personally go to EduGeek.net at £3.99 a month with 2 gigs storage, sql, php, ruby, perl, python and god knows what else plus 80gigs bandwidth why have the hassle of another server to look after?

 

The only problem I have ever had is today's, when their data centre power station blew up.

It never crossed my mind to get external hosting.

That does seem very cheap.

Am I right in assuming then that I could stick a joomla site up on there pretty easily?

I can add one to a xampp set up so it can't be much harder than that can it?

Well we host our school site on there which is php based.

 

I have not looked at Joomla, but take a peak at what it needs, then go here to see if they have it included.
