Selling laptops

It's that time of year again where we replace the staff laptops and therefore get requests from staff to buy their old laptops. The laptops would probably have been supplied with 7 Home on them, which we wiped and put Pro/Edu on using our OVS (unless the purcahse pre-dats our OVS, when we'd presumably have been buying them with Pro pre-installed). I can't re-install 7 Home onto them, since I don't know the licence keys and my OVS only has Pro licence keys. Does that mean I can't sell the laptops?

 

Of course, this might well be not be worth my time to work out, then my technicians' time to reinstall, just to get a few quid from a few teachers!

While it's 100% not worth the time/effort selling to teachers, can't you use the OEM key on the sticker to reinstall 7 home? Like the normal COA style ones if they still exist on the case!

 

Edit - Noticed your 2nd comment, you should be able to use the normal MS website for the ISO https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows7 if you have the sticker

They're laptops, so the COA stickers will have worn down or come off long ago.

Might be worth a check, some are inside the battery covers on laptops so generally last better. The other option is if you have any of the original HP/Dell etc OEM restore disks as they should self-register

If you use Chromebooks in the school, might be worth thinking about Neverware which replaces the Windows OS with Chrome OS.

 

Works on most Windows devices and gives them an extended life

Dont do it!

 

More hassle than its worth!

 

You'll get one or two always bringing it back in to you to fix.

 

Better off either putting them in the bin or using them as loan laptops or try and make a trolley's worth if they are any good.

That's what I was thinking too, but was considering my options.

 

Turns out the teacher only wanted it for Word, which I couldn't supply it with anyway. I've pointed her at office.com

 

We are getting some Chrome books so Neverware might become an option, although the boot time and battery life of these laptops makes me question it. For now, I'm getting brand new Chrome books to sell people on the idea, then might introduce Neverware later. I don't want people's first experience of ChromeOS to be on elderly hardware, as I can see them saying "Chromebooks are too slow/unreliable, we need new Windows laptops".
