Smoothwall Restricted YouTube Videos

We use Smoothwall to filter multiple schools, we had been using the YouTube safety cookie to enable restricted YouTube and then whitelisting approved videos by using this method: https://kb.smoothwall.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002032750-Allowing-Access-to-Restricted-YouTube-With-a-Content-Modification-Policy

 

We have noticed this has stopped working, teachers and pupils now seem to be able to access youtube unrestricted.

 

If restricted mode is toggled on and off manually by the user then it seems to work, until browsing history is cleared, which is no real solution anyway. It seems that the restricted mode cookie is not being applied properly.

 

For now we have enabled the strict restricted mode modification so pupils are getting restricted YouTube, but we are unable to whitelist videos.

 

Is anyone else having similar issues? Speaking with Smoothwall support, they have said that the safety cookie and restricted mode are different things, with different levels of strictness. This used to work, why would it stop now?

Unrestricted access is often due to the QUIC protocol not being blocked. When using a browser that supports QUIC, youtube and other services can switch to using that as the carrier, bypassing the proxy. UDP ports 80 and 443 needs to be blocked outgoing in your firewall and/or the content modification rules called "Remove quick header" needs to be implemented. HTTPS inpection is required for that to work.
