Implementing OneDrive to replace Home Areas

Hey everyone, looking for a little advice on this. Best practices, recommendations, good/bad idea etc.

 

We are a college and each of our students gets a Home area. It is a simple drive mapping to a H: drive that essentially roams with them from one PC to another. We also have folder redirection enable for Desktop, Documents etc which all redirect to the students H: drive.

 

The storage for the H: drive comes from our Windows Server VMs that are dedicated to file sharing. The shared disk is shared at the root level in Windows and individual folders within contain the Student ID's. The H: drive is mapped at student ID level. NTFS perms are in place to prevent students accessing other students data etc.

 

All of our students have access to OneDrive via web and we are trying to push students to use their OneDrive storage more and more.

 

We are currently reviewing servers and storage and our end goal is essentially to OneDrive as students H: drive.

 

As I have said, at the moment students can access OneDrive on the web, but I think long term this is ideally what will happen:

 

1. A student logs into a college PC

2. Their H: drive is automatically mapped (probably a powershell script or something unless there is a GPO to make all this work?). But their H: drive is their OneDrive.

3. Folder redirection - Desktop, Documents should still function as it did before.

 

I think we are going to do this moving forward for the new intake of students in September. So all existing students will remain the same and continue to use onsite storage perhaps.

 

So has anyone performed any similar task, any advice, guides or documents that I can follow? I haven't done much research yet, and I tend to always ask online first in order to see what others have done and maybe to get some advice and best practices etc.Thanks all

Could use known folder move? As far as I know this does support network locations now. You would still have your H drive connected as normal but the folders inside would automatically be moved to Onedrive.
