If 90% were fully (or even mostly) compliant, I think it would be an amazing statistic. I think we need to take note that this article indicates it's a self assessment. It has however made me reflect, that I can not think of a many discussions focusing closely on GDPR compliance whilst remote teaching/learning. Lot's about safe-guarding, rightly so, but not so much about GDPR - or is that a skewed perception?

Seeing as I wouldn’t expect anywhere near that high for when businesses are actually in the office, has home working suddenly made them better?

 

I would love to see the stats on that research. Sample size, the questions ...

 

*Shudder* I think we can safely say that most are doing their best in a difficult time and leave it that as a response to that ‘report’.

Your perception is the same as mine. Safeguarding is being thought through much better perhaps because people have more experience of doing this. Data protection is being remembered sometimes, but not in any depth.

 

I just reviewed a new virtual meetings policy which was keen to stress recordings could only be made if the purpose was agreed in advance with the Chair (good) but failed to mention retention and destruction... Clause now inserted.

I dug a little more in to the company running this research. The say the sample was 2,000 people, but there isn't really much more detail. The exact wording on their website states:

"GDPR Compliance: one in ten of the 2,000 home workers that we questioned said they felt the practices expected of them whilst home working were not GDPR compliant. Given the potential fines imposed, this has to be a business priority."

 

So 10% believe they are in breach. I suggest a significant number of the remaining 90% are simply not aware of any breach. My conclusion is not to take too much notice of the article as it doesn't show any thoroughness, but it proved useful in as much it reminded me to think about GDPR again in more detail from the context of a many more staff working at home.
