[sims] FMS - end of year... trouble ahead?

My bursar has just contacted me to ask if she goes in and starts the end of year process (* running our preliminary report and then uploading it to collect*) will there be any problems...?

 

Unfortunately, she is new and although I believe she has done a similar role in a previous job each school is different and has its own 'quirks'.

 

I seem to remember certain parts of it gives us issues as the user isn't an admin (I have seen various posts saying that it is easier to make FMS users local admin on their machine), but whenever we come across issues like this I am always on hand to sign-in.

 

However, for obvious reasons I am not in school at the moment so can't really help!

 

Also I don't really know what FMS does during the procedure, where it saves files and if the user will be able to access them... my gut feeling says not...

 

She has given me a 20 line Word doc which explains the procedure (but only to someone who knows what they're doing) which includes things like:

 

*Print final CFR before*

 

Tools – define financial years – define/edit years – click current year – wait for boxes to tick – save – wait for boxes to tick – save – should then say ‘Closed not Finalized’

 

Invoices can then be paid in new financial year.

 

(Wait for go ahead from LMS before processing prelim close).

 

Does anyone know if the user must be a local admin on the machine that does this procedure?

 

Or at least what folders on the local machine must be given access (and what permissions)?

Iv support 3 schools who all have fms and I only know of one that has local admin privilege for unrelated purposes.

In the many years of supporting schools with fms I can say have had had very little to do with fms.

 

The only issues I ever came across were default printing issues.

Needing read write permission to Write to pdoxusrs file when creating a report.

General borland database issues.

 

Never had any user operational issues that I can remember.

 

If you wanted to (even if it’s just temporary) why not rdp on to her workstation and assign her username local admin.

This can also be achieved through group policy and could already be configured as security group which she may just need adding to.

Our finance officer shutdown the old financial year and started the next several weeks ago all without local admin right

Our bursar did the rollover last week. Initially she was remoted in via RDS, however had issues printing (see the thread I created for this) as some stuff has to be printed and filed away for legal reasons. I couldn't sort the printing out remotely, so she managed to gain access to the site and print the stuff off. As far as I'm aware, she was successful in rolling over the year.

I doubt she would have local admin over rds taking his meaning to be connecting to an rdshost.

 

I think you’ll be ok mate. She probably more likely screw it up through own fault than technical fault [emoji6]

No, she has no admin rights on the RDS host or her normal office PC. We've never had need for that and I'm strongly against granting local admin privileges for non sysadmins. I've only done it once in this school, because the site team need it on their desktop for the heating monitoring software and CCTV software. I've had no other issues in terms of requiring local admin, though on the odd occasion I've had to grand full control for a specific user to the C:\Program Files\SIMS folder.
