Looking at people's Thanks/Thanked/Rep Power numbers, it would appear that you earn more rep by thanking people than you do by getting thanked. Isn't that a little backwards? Surely one's rep should depend on how many people they have helped out, not the other way around?

I think you get more rep power depending on who thanks you, i.e. a member with more rep power thanking you is better than somebody with less rep power. If that makes sense.

Rep power ( the number ) and Reputation (green boxes) are different.

True, but what is confuses me is that I have been thanked more times than you, for example, yet have a lower score in both rep power and green boxes.

Lee's answer makes sense though...

Nick, I think this is because reputation can be added by clicking on the scales symbol bottom left of a post. This is different to thanks. It gives (for positive rep) or takes away (for negative rep) the person who made the post additional reputation points based on the rep power who is leaving reputation. (and doesn't show as Thanks?)

Perhaps different words need to be used for rep poer and reputation to make it easier to distinguish between them?

Basically when you get thanked you get 5 rep points (NOT rep power) as its a fixed value.

When you give reputation though its based on your rep power so if someone with high rep power gives you rep you can get a nice boost (beg Geoff for example :D)

The thanks system can only be fixed values in its current form but the big benefit with thanks is you can get thanks from the same person in 2 different thread where as giving rep is limited.

You can only give rep to the same person again once you have given out rep to X amount of people first aka spread the rep. Thanks can be given once per thread though.

Understand?

Thanks = People you have thanked

Thanked = People Who have thanked you

Oh yeah. D'oh!!

That makes more sense in that case :-)

ZH - any way of seeing who has added/removed rep from me? I know I can see the posts in which I was thanked, which is useful. Another nice feature might be to get notified when you are given rep/thanks.

I once got bad rep... can you believe it... ME?!?!

you check by clicking on your avatar at the top and then scroll to the bottom of that page.

In your user CP, there is a box that shows your rep gains/losses under the thread subscriptions box.

Ah, okay; I thought that was just thanked posts as that was all that was listed in mine. I do now see the rep power in there too, now that some kind soul has given me some. Can't see who, though, which is odd...

Actually no, you should only see thanked posts. There is a good reason for this. Its to stop tit-for-tat rep wars which I have seen happen on other forums.

All rep is logged so if its bad we (Site Admins) can investigate it further if requested.

So ... let me check if this is right?

If you thank people they earn points.

If you give rep, the points they get are based on the points you have plus the number of posts they have made?

The rep points also increase on the 3rd friday of every month beginning with M and negative rep can be eliminated by the careful use of Vanish before washing your clothes ... erm ...

I am still not sure about it, but I will give thanks where deserved. Perhaps it is just that I am not a negative sort of person.

I can see that someone gave me rep power, although I can't see who - that potentially stops the tit-for-tat that you mention. Surely it has to be this way - how would I request you to investigate my bad rep if I didn't know I had it?!
