Google Chrome using proxy.pac file from C drive

For a variety of reasons, some better than others, I'm trying to force Chrome to pick up a proxy.pac file hosted locally on the C drive

 

In the Proxy Script Address I'm using file:///c:/proxy/proxy.pac but it's not working. The same pac file hosted on a web server works fine.

 

Clearly I'm doing something wrong but my google-fu is letting me down this afternoon...

 

Any (clean) suggestions?

Everything seems to read the public folder why not try that?

Use chrome://net-internals/#proxy to reload the proxy file, sadly they removed most of the useful stuff from that page to see what's happening.

Google removed support for loading .pac files from file:// URLs in Chrome v72.

Could you load the .pac from a web server instead (via HTTP/S)?

Oh well, explains why I spent a fruitless afternoon trying to get it working then!!!
