Why are all the keys in that order? QWERTY history

vowels on the top row in general, w and y being semi-vowels

middle row is a-m bottom row is z-n in general

 

s is near z because of american morse code weirdness

 

c is next to x to avoid a patent, i is near 8 so you could type 18xx fast,

 

o is next to i for typing 0 and 1 easily (first type-writers didn't bother with having a 0 or 1 key)

 

q is in the corner because it's not used much
