Had a desktop here with a 4 beep error and no post. I assumed bad PSU and swapped it but no luck.... Bad motherboard is the assumption but I had time and was not convinced. I saw a post mention that 4 beeps was actually an over current warning so I began removing things and POST! it was the accessories supply connector.

In some HPs the power connectors for HDD, ODD come via the motherboard not the PSU direct. The ODD connector had been modified (from factory) that left one of the sata power connector with exposed ends, these must have shorted on the case after we'd removed the ODD power connectors.

Anyhow, if you get the 4 beeps error unplug this from the mainboard and see if it recovers. I was lucky in a way swapping the PSU could have nudged this connector and cleared the fault leading to the wrong conclusion.
