mrstrong Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Hi, Teacher can't get emails on her ipad using outlook app since september. On investigation it's an ipad 4 so stuck on ios 10.3.3 Tried to update and get message iOS Version too old: basically "...from sep 3rd iOS 10 not supported" Thanks MS! I suppose I could try built in ipad mail app but last time I tried that it didn't support groups. Any suggestions ?
tmoon-mint Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 You could use the OWA in Safari. Using an MDM you could even deploy a webclip to it.
bald_pig Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 tbh I'd do what I do with any other piece of unsupported 5-7 year old piece of electrical equipment and get it replaced with something newer! 1
mdrabble Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Same position here as well - it a teacher own personal device and they don't want to but a new one, so I setup the inbuilt mail app and told them they cannot access the Address Book, Staff Calendar etc.
FragglePete Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 Now, that would explain it. I've got a whole load of upset teachers with older iPADs that can't set up Outlook on their devices. Waiting for a bit of quiet time to look into it, but that'll be the reason then! Grrrrrrr.... Pete

mdrabble Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 If the teacher signs into a personal device with their Personal Apple ID it wil let them download the older version... Have tried that - fails at the Office 365 signing in screen. MS look as if they have blocked older version from signing in
elsiegee40 Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 (edited) I think an honest conversation needs to be had with the teacher. Now that this version of iOS has gone out of support, they will increasingly find that other apps stop working on it too. Outlook may be the first she has noticed, but it certainly won’t be the last. MS’s argument, and that of other developers, will be that without security updates the risk of data being compromised is high. As this is “work” email, then it could well be a risk their employer too so actually we techs should probably be thanking MS. Edited September 11, 2019 by elsiegee40 2
mrstrong Posted September 13, 2019 Author Posted September 13, 2019 For now I've gone back to the ios Mail app. Although initially I couldn't find it (didn't know you can uninstall system apps!) so after much head scratching realised I had to re-download/install it from app store. Also set her groups in office 365 to "follow in inbox" As regards old equipment this teacher is "lucky" as we still have several ipad 2 on ios 9 ! And don't get me started on PCs/laptops: we recently did an audit of windows 7 PCs/laptops (as it is going end of support). We currently have 80, 40 of which will be more than 9 years old in Jan 2020! I will try to update as many as poss but now my WDS server has just died on me and with all the day to day support etc its going to be a struggle (on my own here (primary 600 kids, >100pc/laptop, >100ipad, >200 chromebook) working 3 days a week term time only "network manager" +1 day teaching computing!)
