DNS across subnets

I want to run a domain across two different subnets. I'm planning to have DCs on each side of the divide but I'm not certain on how to get DNS to work across the link. Is it as simple as setting up a DNS server on either side and pointing them at each other ? Have I missed anything ?

Do you actually want it split across the subnets? As in any reason not to just use multiscopes on your single (insert another number) DC that works with both scopes at once?

Thanks for your reply. Perhaps it's easier if I explain the situation.

 

We have two primaries linked to our secondary with VPN links. The primary hardware is well past sell by date and so I'm designing a new set up. It seems simplest for admin purposes to just subsume them into our main AD (and indeed we have capacity as I saw this coming).

 

I don't think the links are good enough to run everything remotely off our servers, so they need local resources. So a local server running file storage and a DC (read only) seems to me the best approach.

 

I've got a theoretical grip on how most of this can be done but not so much the DNS side which obviously needs to be sorted in order to get this all to work.
