Hi. We are currently looking at getting access control installed on our external doors, our gates use Paxton/Mifare so we will be sticking with that. My query is whether people would recommend going down the route of PoE or mains power when supplying the doors/controllers? We have the capacity to do this via PoE if I purchase a few more PoE switches but not sure due to the nature of the project whether it is better to go via mains power? Thanks.

I would go POE for a few reasons.

1. Don't need an electrician.

2. Can easily reset the controller of needed by disabling the switchport or unplugging the cable at the switch. Much better than going into the ceiling.

POE all the way, a few advantages are:

  • Easier and normally cheaper installation
  • Network Monitoring of the batteries
  • You can use the battery backup for other purposes (Servers, Backup NAS, CCTV)
  • You can increase or decease the amount of backup you have, IE buy a smaller or larger UPS
