If I log in as a local administrator and run, for example, Calculator, it launches fine. No mess, no fuss.

If I log in as a domain administrator, same thing happens.

Login as my testing users, though, and they won't open.

This applies to Calculator, Camera, Snip & Sketch and Voice Recorder (the rest have been ripped out or AppLocker'd)

If you select an item, you get the white bar below it and it never opens.

Through disabling GPO's etc I've come to the conclusion that the root of the problem is the mandatory profile.

I can keep all of my policies in place, and they'll work as long as I tell the user they have no profile location. If I point them back at the .V6, boom, they stop working.

I've heard rumours about disabling/removing the store can break apps, so I've reimaged with the store and set Turn off the Store application back to Not Configured

I've used https://gpsearch.azurewebsites.net/ to ensure that the registry setting controlled by this policy isn't set. It isn't.

Now I'm at the end of my knowledge for debugging profiles.

Reeaaaaally hoping someone recognises this and it's an easy fix.

Progress!

Okay they open now, with that policy set, but then immediately terminate.

Except Camera, which just sits there complaining 0xA00F4244... which is fair... because this laptop doesn't have a webcam

I expect that now puts me in the same situation as this thread

http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-10/207941-windows-10-apps-closing-immediately.html

Edit: Time to reimage with Solitaire enabled, I guess..

Yep, looks like Solitaire is the problem.

I'd seen reports that said it only mucked up the apps if you upgraded, not if you did a fresh install.

Guess not.

Edit: Hang on a minute. No it isn't. I'd commented the wrong line. It's not Solitaire I'd kept in. It's the 'Get Office' app Microsoft.MicrosoftOfficeHub...

Edit2: Except now I've reimaged with neither Solitaire or Office Hub and UWP apps still open..

Perhaps it's a combination of both the store and that registry key being set from the very beginning?

Requires further investigation.

Edit2:

Okay, so reimaging with Microsoft.StorePurchaseApp and Microsoft.WindowsStore removed, but that GPO in place, results in Calculator, Camera and Snip & Sketch loading, but Voice Recorder still closes instantly.

I just changed to using Local Profiles and all the Apps I want now open.

If you find a solution I would be very interested. I am running 1809 so hopefully anything you find will still apply to Roaming profiles and our build.

I've identified the GPO that's stopping Voice Recorder launching, as if I turn it off (uncheck Link Enabled) the problem doesn't present itself, the user is given the 'Do you want the allow this to access your microphone' option, and then it 'just works'. But there's nothing in the GPO that immediately jumps out at me as possibly causing the issue.

With that GPO link enabled, Voice Recorder gives the following error in the event log:

Faulting application name: SoundRec.exe, version: 10.1812.1901.4003, time stamp: 0x5c304b39

Google is finding me nothing except an answers.microsoft.com thread that (predictably) doesn't answer the question, and this EduGeek thread

There's some talk of Registering the Microsoft.UI.Xaml app on logon but that supposedly adds a 10-15 second delay to logon times where the user only has a black screen.

I'm tempted to just rip out Voice Recorder too and find some third-party software that does the trick.

Edit:

Hang on.. I'm starting to think these only work for the first logon.. Admittedly I'm still faffing around with GPO's but now my user can't open Calculator or Snip & Sketch either.. Camera still opens and stays with the no-camera error as mentioned earlier, though...

Damnit, yep. Have not made as much progress as initially thought.

UWP apps only work once. If the profile is removed, they stop working again as mentioned in other threads.

Running out of time. I think I'm definitely going to have to go down the 'give up and find third-party software' route.
