ghockin Posted May 9, 2019 Posted May 9, 2019 Hi Guys So, we have been investigating using SCCM DPM to run our backup schedule. At the moment Im backing up hyper-v vm's from the bare metal agent to a iSCSI storage server with deduplication enabled (Which claims its working). The system at the moment claims its transferring about 350 Gb a day over to the storage in incremental changes, however the amount of storage data used on the storage server is going up by 1TB a day ? Im a bit confused ! I am very new to DPM so its very possible I dont understand how its working ! We do one express backup a day (Which I understand to be incremental). Any assistance greatly appreciated !

If so then it will over-allocate disk space for future backups - this will settle down as it learns exactly how much you backup each day etc. If you are running out of space there is a manual way to force it to shrink the pre-allocated space or you can just leave it and it will sort itself out over the coming weeks/months.

I’m a bit confused when you say you’re backing up using the bare metal agent. I’ve not used DPM 2019 before (only 2010 and 2012), but the term bare metal usually refers to backing up Windows (and system files) installed onto a physical host. On DPM 2012 it executes Windows Server backup to do this. But for virtual machines this would be pointless, as the normal and best way to backup VMs is to backup the host and select the individual VMs you’d like to backup, where DPM creates a live snapshot of each VM.
