Connecting new Server that has 10/1gb NIC

So just bought a new server and got it in the office to setup a testnetwork.

 

I connect it to a small mini switch and have noticed it will only pickup a valid IP if on a gigabit switch. We have a lot of old 10/100 switches still.

 

I assume this is because of the gigabit/10 gigabit card requires a minimum 1gb speed to function?

 

Will this cause me issues when I then connect to the full network.

If you're plugged into a gigabit port you'll be fine.

Your switches should be linked with gigabit ports otherwise you're going to get a lot of bottlenecks, and the server can plug into one of those.

 

The main effect will be the new server isn't any faster before otherwise. It will work though

It was hard enough getting them to let me purchase a new server so will eventually overtime replace all our old switches.
