W2k3 Spooler + HP Drivers

Anyone use HP 24x0 series printers with Server 2003, if so what version of the drivers are you using as the ones I have atm are a right pain! We updated the drivers last year when we put a new print server in and got the awful batch HP made that trashed everything, found some off an old server to use that at least work but they're still not quite right...

 

When mapping a 2420 \ 2430 for the first time as a user it won't work saying "drivers not properly installed, files missing", only way to get it working is to go on as admin, map a local port and install the drivers manually - after that it works OK. Don't have this problem with any other printer so was wondering if anyone else came across the same problem?

Is the printer using a HP TCP/IP port? If so create a standard TCP/IP port and let the printer use this instead.

Nope just standard TCP\IP, it's definitely a driver problem - the team who made the 2420 ones need shooting

How are you pushing out/distributing the printer? Group Policy or scripts?

VBS logon scripts, we like to have control over default printers

Works fine here! Windows is using the generic Postscript drivers and printing via Linux/Samba/Cups though.

HP drivers are awful, having a right old fight with 1022n drivers at the minute, some would cause spooler to crash, and some would cause explorer.exe to bum out.

 

Try using a different driver am using a Deskjet Plus driver that seems to be working fine.

Turn off bi-directional printing.
