Audio EQ rack replaceemnt

I have an old digital EQ unit in an audio rack that I am considering replacing with a new simpler unit. The old one will not save settings and is not intuitive to use at all. This unit is in a gym and I always get complaints about the audio in there and being able to use the EQ makes a significant difference. As it is now, I have to be there every time the unit is used as it wont save settings and is too complicated for others to be willing to learn.

 

Will replacing this be as easy as it looks? Just unscrew the old one from the rack pull it out and switch the plugs? I have confirmed that the old has XLR connection for in and out. I do not have access to the back of the rack as it is a small one mounted to a wall.

It should be a direct swap out. However, I'm sure your aware things aren't always as easy as they should be.

 

Problems you might find are cables not being long enough if the new unit is a different depth, and wires breaking as they are often thin install cables. Check the rack depth as well, as if there is lots of cables in the back, you might not have as much room as it looks from the outside.

 

If it were me, i'd find a quiet time, and carefully pull the old unit out to see what your faced with.

 

What are you planning on replacing it with? Have you got some sort of system controller like a DBS driverack? I'd also look at the Behringer x32 rack units, as they do several things in one. On both of those, you should be able to back up the settings to a PC. You can also setup volume limiters which is a good idea in most venues.

XLR is easy to extend, just buy another small cable and daisy chain it on.

 

What sort of control do you want to give to the end user, and at what budget? It would be very easy to install a DSP with a seperate touchscreen giving basic EQ control to the whole system while retaining presets for quick recalls?
