Just been reading through the new SmartBoard Notebook v10 software and the drivers allow monitoring of the boards through SNMP - got plenty of other stuff that could be monitored as well but seems like all the software I'm seeing looks pricey.

Anyone got any suggestions of a cheap \ free SNMP manager software, hopefully with pretty red \ green bits for system health etc?

Cheers

Yep, nagios will work assuming you can knock up a script to query the right snmp bits (chances are you could reuse one of the many printer snmp check scripts).

Had a look at Nagios but it does say it's not meant as a replacement for SNMP systems - anyone use it purely for monitoring Windows systems, HP switches, printers etc i.e. no other Linux devices?

Also prefer stuff that runs on Windows if poss but seeing as Nagios is free looks worth a try on the test network ;)

Sweet, will give it a go - what Linux flavour do you run it under?

Did you need to dload any extra bits to get all the monitoring functions or does it have all it needs out of the box?

I use Ubuntu LTS for my server installs.

If you use the version of nagios in the repository then apt will install all the extras for you. If you want the newest version you will have to do a manual installation and satisfy any dependencies yourself.

Could be fun, not really used Linux in anger apart from on my eee and IPCop so should be interesting - one for next week
