abillybob Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 Hi All Hoping someone can help. So I've successfully moved all the users over now to Office 365 from Google and I'm in the process of setting up the DNS settings. I have deleted all the MX records that where pointing to google and have followed the instructions on all the settings and added the MX record for Office 365 along with other DNS records it asked me to do. Problem is I can send emails from Office 365 but any external emails sent to my email address still come through on Google which I don't understand. I spoke to 1&1 and they said it can take a couple of hours but I'm panicking as it's now been 3 hours and still external emails are going to my google account rather than my Office 365. I have also gone to my admin console - Setup - Domains, clicked on our domain and then selected check DNS settings. It then gives me a tick to say All DNS records are correct, no errors found. I've tried calling O365 but it seems they're not open over a weekend and 1&1 weren't much help so I'm unsure on what to do. Would anybody be able to advise or help, I don't want us not to have a proper email system come Monday!! Thanks in advance!!
rich_tech Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 (edited) Different isp servers take different amounts of time to propagate the changes, it’s not unusual here for our updates to work instantly, but other isps then like BT take up to 24 hours to update Usually we advise here it can take up to 48 hours to update fully, especially as Google’s dns are based in America (it’s been ages since I used g+ and realised that may not be anymore) Also check your registrar is the active name servers being used and their not being done through a hosting company controlling them, any changes you make in the host panel won’t have an effect if that’s the case and your not actively in control of them Edited December 8, 2018 by rich_tech

How do I check the Registrar?
Katy Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 What's the TTL on your DNS? That'll state how long it takes to propagate. It's usual to set it down to something low like an hour a couple of days before making this kind of change. WHOIS will tell you what the active name servers are for your domain. If Office 365 says the record is there, then it is just being cached in dns for whoever is sending you mail, and you'll just have to wait for whatever your TTL is for it to update. 1
AlanD Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 Too late to tell you, but it’s best to reduce the to value before you make a change to mx record.
rich_tech Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 Thankyou for your help!! How do I check the Registrar? Easiest way to tell - log onto your domain registrar (company who the domain is registered with) control panel and see if its pointing to their default name servers - if it isn't most stick a warning there saying their not the active nameservers. Or use a lookup tool website https://mxtoolbox.com/ - theres plenty of options you can use to check there.
DJ-1701 Posted December 8, 2018 Posted December 8, 2018 Or just sleep and see it working fine in the afternoon. 1
DJ-1701 Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Prediction: It's all working now and you didn't need to do anything but wait.
