Has anyone installed SoftGrid onto a Windows 2003 Terminal Server?

If so how easy is it to use and what does it actually do?

Our school is also looking for a product to virtualize our applications. We choose for VMware's Thinstall and not softgrid. The reason for this is that educational applications are compiled crappy and very old. Softgrid cannot virtualize many of them. The ease and flexibility of thinstall can do this for us.

A negative point of thinstall is that it does not contain a streaming mechanism like softgrid. You just simply place the exe on a share and run it from there. Maybe it helps you somehow

As mentioned by bio, Softgrid is for application virtualisation. I'm considering using Citrix XenApp (purely because I use it for thin client access and have the licenses).

The main benefit I can see at the moment for application virtualisation is managing licensing and limiting users to a specific application (e.g. SIMS .NET).

Softgrid is being replaced by Microsoft Application Virtualization which may be better. If you can hang on a bit then it may be worth looking at that.

Being replaced already, was only a few months ago Microsoft were demo-ing it at the JISC meeting as their next big thing. This is a bit of a problem with Microsoft imo, too many products overlapping and being replaced so quickly by the time you realise what you need, test and deploy it's already been replaced

I was at the Technet event in London the other day - where we got a nice talk and demo of all the new virtualization stuff. I will hunt out the details from it - and post the url to the presentation notes...

Looks quite useful - but as mentioned above, the sequencing could be a pain - but worth it in the end no doubt.
