Video Recording system, advice please.

Hi.

Im trying to spec up a system that has the purpose of video recording.

But im unsure on a few things. Heres what i have thus far:

 

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4500

Mobo: Asustek P5K-VM

Mem: Kingston ValueRAM 2x1GB PC6400

GFX: onboard

SND: onboard

Optical 0: LiteOn 20X DVD+/-RW/RAM IDE

Optical 1: LiteOn 20X DVD+/-RW/RAM IDE

HDD 0: Hitachi Deskstar 7K160 80GB

Case: Antec NSK 4480

PSU: Comes with case

Monitor: Iiyama 20" E2003WS

Speakers: Built into monitor

Keyboard: n/a

Mouse: n/a

Tuner: Pinnacle Systems PCTV Dual Hybrid Pro PCIe

Media Center Remote: Comes with tuner.

 

 

The thing im a little unsure on is storage.

The HDD speced there is literally just for the OS.

Im unsure wether to get:

- A large 1Tb drive for the system, mounted internally.

- Have 2x500Gbs in RAID Mirroring.

- Have an external drive for storage.

- Have a NAS for storage.

 

Thoughts?

Not sure why you would need 80GB just for an OS...

 

It depends on what definition you are recording in and what format you are saving to. The tests I have done when recording hi def (to dvrms on our windows MCE) used around 20gb for hour. This can be transcoded, but obviously you lose the quality.

 

Currently we have a media centre with a 160gb drive in, that transcodes automatically each night to a windows 2003 server with mirrored SATA drives in (300GB each).

 

This is still under testing though as I have discovered with some dissapointment that trying to play a high def video file over a network is practically bringing the network to a standstill.

 

When you say NAS, what do you mean? something like a Netgear ReadyNAS, or a buffalo linkstation box? There seems to be a huge difference in the performance of NAS boxes.

 

1TB is a lot of data to lose, how do you intend to back that up?

I allways have the OS on a seperate drive to everything else. Force of habit.

Its a modified LaCie rackmount running 2k3. Has about 700Gb left on it.

 

Just put the order in. Gonna try it with the NAS as its storage. If it runs ok, ive saved a few hundred quid, if it doesnt, then i'll buy a FW/USB drive for it. Or wack a few spare 160Gb HDDs in it.

Should be ok though, its going on our admin network, which has very very low traffic usage.
