[1803, au] Hiding Settings/Control Panel

Right, this is probably the most annoying glitch I've seen so far and wonder if anyone else has resolved this.

 

So: The behaviour of "Settings", ala "Control Panel" is now set via at computer level rather than user level. So, in computer config>admin templates>control panel we can set Settings Page Visibility to Enabled and then limit what we see using ShowOnly: or Hide:.

So as all standard users need is the printers, we have ShowOnly:printers set. This works. However as it's at computer level, and however we set the scope, this applies to all users regardless of their status. Quite an issue when we often have to go into control panel as admins to set resolutions, screen mirroring/extending etc.

 

Has anyone else stumbled across this or been able to fix it?

We just use control panel for all that, as that still works on the original user based gpo and leave settings locked down for all as you mentioned.

 

The other option is restrict settings via applocker, and let them do printer settings via control panel via the old gpo if you want to access settings as admins

Answered in another thread. Details as follows:

 

This, is one of the biggest Windows 10 pains, as it can only be controlled via Local Machine.

To get around this limitation, what I did was set a registry key that gets applied from Group Policy Preferences with just the pages I wanted them to have access to and set it to always apply.

 

Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Value Name: SettingsPageVisibility 
Value Type: REG_SZ 
Value Setting: ShowOnly:printers;datausage;personalization-start;network-wifisettings;network-wifi

 

When admins login, I set a GPP to delete the key in case we need to change settings.

Oooh, cheers; did search but clearly not well enough Think more than anything I'd like to move away from anything that's due to disappear soon so didn't want to rely on control panel.
