Hi I seem to be getting modern apps coming back after removing in my image and then redeploying it. The image is being captured by produced using MDT and deployed using SCCM. What I am I not setting?

I kill things with this powershell in the OSD.

########################################
# Remove Windows 10 Modern Apps (System)
########################################

# To find app names use:
# Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -online  | Select DisplayName, PackageName

$appxpackages = ('Messaging', 'OneNote', 'OneConnect', 'SkypeApp', 'XboxApp')

ForEach($package in $appxpackages)
{
   try{
    $packagenames=(Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -online | ?{$_.DisplayName -like '*' + $package + '*'}).PackageName

    ForEach ($packagename in $packagenames)
    {
	    DISM /online /remove-provisionedappxpackage /packagename:$packagename
    }
   }
   catch
   {
    # Do nothing
    Write-Host "Critical error removing package: "
    Write-Host $package
   }
}

I have not had anything come back.

Using the -online switch in the remove command?

What apps are coming back?

You sure it’s not consumer apps like candy crush etc? Which can be removed via GPO

Seeing extra apps? Turn them off (GPO: Turn off Microsoft consumer experiences)

The latest Windows 10 feature upgrade released this month (1511) includes a new feature that automatically installs a few apps from the Windows Store. These apps are installed for the signed-on user, not provisioning on the machine. So the script ignores them, as it’s only looking at provisioned apps.

So how do you get rid of these? The simplest way is to keep them from installing in the first place. There are two ways to do that:

  • Don’t create reference images on a computer that is connected to the internet. (This can be problematic for other reasons too, as OS and app updates can install while the reference image is being created).
  • Tell Windows to disable these features.

Dynamically inserted app tiles are where you find all that bloatware like Candy Crush and FarmVille. They are placed in the Start menu only once during profile creation.

Whether dynamically inserted app tiles are placed in the Start menu during profile creation depends on two things:

  1. The DefaultLayout.xml in the Default user profile includes them.
  2. A registry key DWORD-property HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager\PreInstalledAppsEnabled and very likely also …\OemPreInstalledAppsEnabled.

As the previous section suggests, those unwanted apps are actually dynamically inserted app tiles or enhanced placeholder tiles, which are provided with app suggestions by the ContentDeliveryManager app as soon as you connect the computer to the internet. Meaning that a removed placeholder is never automatically added back to your Start menu.

This shows very quickly if you install Windows 10 Pro on a computer without internet connection.

See also post #10 in this thread for additional registry settings.

The Store, Xbox, Skype, Groove Music, Maps and Weather are the ones coming back.

This is what I am using to remove the default apps.

FWIW, I wouldn't remove the Windows Store and XboxIdentityProvider apps. The latter is a core app, and the former may cause issues further down the line.

Removing, uninstalling, or reinstalling Microsoft Store app is not supported

In Windows 10, we do not recommend removing or uninstalling the Microsoft Store app.

This behavior is by design.

If you uninstalled Microsoft Store by any means and want to reinstall it, the only Microsoft-supported method is to reset or reinstall the operating system, which will reinstall Microsoft Store.

Important notice:

  • Uninstalling the Microsoft Store app is not supported, and uninstalling it may cause unintended consequences.
  • There is no supported workaround to uninstall or reinstall Microsoft Store.

IT professionals can configure, limit, or block access to Microsoft Store for client computers. See the following article for more information:

Configure access to Microsoft Store

The Store, Xbox, Skype, Groove Music, Maps and Weather are the ones coming back.

I tend to remove the apps from the install.wim before it's imported into SCCM (i.e. offline). It seems less hassle that way.
