Enco Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Stupid question i know but i have everything but a CPU installed, so RAM, PSU, MOBO, Fans, SSD, GFX Card all connected. When i press the power button the PC does not power up, no fans spinning or anything. Is that normal, i should know the answer but thers first time for everything and this is it. Thanks
mtillbrook Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Yer, these days I doubt it would power-up at all without a CPU. Back in "the old days" you would have probably found that the power supply would have run as they were "stupid" but they tend to have some intelligence in them these days! it does beg the question "Why"?
Cam_liddell Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Yes, the PC should get power and your fans etc should start spinning. Depending on your motherboard you might get some error codes either through the audio beeps or a OSD on the motherboard itself. I would double check the power supply actually works. Do you know what motherboard it is you have? Does the motherboard itself have a power button to test.
Enco Posted July 11, 2018 Author Posted July 11, 2018 The motherboard is an ASUS H110M-R. The only reason i ask is because i googled it and got mixed results, some say yes like yourself and others say no i would not... Never tried it before until now. I'm asking because im selling it without a CPU and i know before removing it a few months back it did turn on, this is the first time ive tried to turn it on without the CPU, i'd put a CPU in to test it but i dont have one that fits this board
difinity Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 Is a CPU fan plugged in ? I'd expect that to give a few little spins but I wouldn't expect to see life from anything else.
Enco Posted July 11, 2018 Author Posted July 11, 2018 everything is plugged in all the fans and nothing happens, it used turn on and power up only difference is theres no CPU installed, im just wondering if its a new thing now that it has to have a CPU installed to even turn on now
Cam_liddell Posted July 11, 2018 Posted July 11, 2018 (edited) I would take a closer look at your power supply and reseat all the connections. Edit: Asus motherboards tend to be pretty good, they tend to allow bios flashbacks etc even without a cpu installed so. My guess would be that the power supply is an issue. To check this, you would need to jump the PSU and see if it's fans spin. Edited July 11, 2018 by Cam_liddell
Enco Posted July 11, 2018 Author Posted July 11, 2018 Ok, so i've tried another PSU and still nothing so it cant be the PSU
Enco Posted July 11, 2018 Author Posted July 11, 2018 I've jumped the power supply and everything powered on so im guessing it needs CPU to turn on using the power button on the case.
