Bought the wrong MSATA SSD

Hi,

I bought the MSATA SSD on the right to replace the one on the left, but the new one has a different connection. I thought they both were the same.

They look the same to me, both msata? Datasheets on the chinesium model on the left seem to state both msata and pcie though. As it's a 32gb model I'd be inclined to believe it would be msata, therefore surely they're both the same. Edited June 6, 2018 by synaesthesia

Flip the right-hand SSD over and the notch and connectors will be in the same location as the left SSD.

Sorry could't access the other account forgot my password, i had flip it and it fits put the computer doesn't pick it up, i'm using this adaptor ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B074Z44NF2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=AP0ABZZM4QKJV&psc=1 ) to connect the pc.

Does it show up in Disk Manager? If so it may need initialising or making online before you can then partition and format it.

The question must be asked, why bother with one of those if using an adapter, instead of just buying a SATA drive?

MSATA and PCIE drives are physically identical but are not compatible.

I'm using it for a till, need to upgrade the storage for a till so using the adaptor to connect to the pc to clone, the old one works fine and i can access the drive but the new one does nothing, how would i format the new SSD if it doesn't get piked up

Yes, to be clear the original drive (left) isn't mSATA it's an mPCIe SSD. Physically identical to mSATA but electrically different.

 

EDIT: you can't use the adaptor to read the old drive nor can you use the new msata drive in the till.

Hi, i was able to to get the old one to work fine with the adaptor, it just came up like another drive.

 

So the upgrade ssd needs to be a mPCIe SSD?

"Designed for mSATA SSD's only,not support mini PCIe PATA or SATA SSD" is what your adaptor states (despite the title) so the original must be an mSATA. Sooooo does the new drive work with the adaptor?

There doesn't seem to be a mPCIe SSD on the Biwin website, so I think they are both mSATA.

I occasionally see issues where non initialised SSDs aren't detected when connected with USB devices.

I'd say then that both the new drive and the old drive are indeed mSATA but the new drive is faulty. How disappointing and a waste of time, (old standards can suck) As you purchased the drive from Amazon you should be able to exchange it.

 

I hope the till doesn't have any annoying bios lockout or tpm encryption on the hardware...

I would strongly suggest trying to find a reputable brand; the chinesium stuff is really something of a lottery.

Ignore my previous link. It's the same as you've already got but without the USB adapter. This is what you want to buy https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-1-8-Inch-Micro-SATA-HDD-SSD-3-3V-to-2-5-Inch-22PIN-SATA-5V-Adapter-new/163069865186 so you can connect your mSATA SSD directly to SATA, that should let your PC see it and initialise and format it. I don't think it's dead.

I have two of the new SSD because i'm upgrading two tills, would it be worth trying the second one? when i plug it it a drive pops up but its greyed out.
