sippo Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 What is it? People seem to think it's my job to know what it is! It looks as if it's to do with how long to keep data? It's not a technical thing?
GrumbleDook Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Supposed records management term that annoys people who work in records management, from what I've seen
sippo Posted May 25, 2018 Author Posted May 25, 2018 But what does that actually mean? Is it a technical thing or data retention item. It seems to have landed on my desk...
PotNoodleTech Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 Sounds like one of the bull**** terminologies consultants like to use in order to sound like they know more they they do. Reminds me of Tron - "it's Digital Jazzz maaaan".
Ksavage413 Posted May 25, 2018 Posted May 25, 2018 It's keeping data accessible regardless of technological changes, ie: keep the data you use usable through keeping it updated, making sure the software you use to access it is up to date, and that people are sufficiently trained to interpret it. source: scrounging up a few articles and trying to wrap my head around it. 1
GrumbleDook Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 Pretty much what @Ksavage413 has said. Within Records Management and data retention schedules, there is a requirement that data is always accessible, meaningful and that you can uphold the rights of the data subject (as and when they apply, considering exceptions and other factors). As systems evolve or are replaced, data collected, stored, processed and archived should have continuity to it, as a break in continuity would mean a break in access and/or integrity ... which are, in turn, breaches of GDPR. Simple example. If you retain data in the form of an MIS archive, then make sure you have the software to access it. If you back up to tape and have a 25 year retention ... do you still have that DDS2 drive?
