Qualifications for IT Managers

I am looking at a qualification that is preferably online based suitable for IT managers within Education.

 

Can anybody make recommendations or share their experiences on courses they have attended/completed?

If you're an MBCS then try to work towards getting CITP (Chartered IT Professional). It takes a while and the exam is a bastard but it's worth setting chartership as a goal.

I'm not as yet although it is something I've been looking into. Sounds like you would recommend?

I do recommend the outcome and you can start now by joining the BCS and documenting all your CPD. Build up a log of every bit of training or new thing you learned in your everyday work. New server installation, new application, different way of doing things, project work etc. That will become your key document to maintain for your entire working life, as important as your CV.

I would also recommend gaining the CITP from the BCS... However if you do not already work at SFIA level 5 for at least X amount of years, then I would recommend looking at either the RIITech award from the BCS or the ICTTech from the ECUK via the IET. Both of them are for practitioners who work at least at level 3 of the SFIA.

 

You also have ITIL, which has been mentioned above, the downside is that if you want to do anything higher than foundation, it is expensive... There is the educational version, FITS - but it's not an online course. There's Project management certs like Prince2, Comptia Project+, etc... That can be self-studied and you can sit the exams at a testing centre.

 

You also have the option for a Post Graduate Cert in Technology Management with the OU, which is a 1/3 of a MSc. However alot of colleges are offering a level 2 award in Team Leading for free...

 

I guess the question is, as there is a wide variety of courses out there, what do you want to do and what budget is available to you for this???

Also what is SFIA level 5?
