Exporting HyperV VM gives error

I have a HyperV server running on 2008 R2 DataCenter. I am trying to export a VM but it gets to about 60% and then gives me "An error has occurred". No other info, no reason why. I am exporting to an external Hard drive attached directly via USB to the Server.

 

The idea is to move the VM to my new 2016 HyperV server.

 

Any ideas?

 

I also run Veeam backups. Would it be possible to restore the backup of the VM to the new server seeing as though its going from a 2008 R2 hyperv environment to a 2016 server?

Only suggestion I would have is to turn off the VM, and copy over the VHD/VHDX files to the USB drive, then manually setup a new machine on the other HyperV server with the same settings (and MAC address, if you set a static one), and replace the VHD/VHDX files with the ones you copied to the USB.
