Found some pupils on Youtube today, thought they may have used a proxy but turns out they just went to Youtube's IP so 208.65.153.238 and it bypasses the proxy filtering. Just wanted to let you know so you could ban the IP just incase.

Well, I myself am a student but we are filtered by Herts Grid For Learning.

Do you know what software they use? It must be poor if it lets you do that.

probably rm's filter system, we always found it very easy to get round.

 

Suggest your techs look at some of the other filters out there, wether it be a linux solution or smoothwall/similar

 

I'd say an in house filtering system should be integral to any schools it, especially as most will plug into ad groups and allow levelled filtering.

Usually best to ban "IP only" requests - this fouls up a small proportion of websites, but mostly such requests are malicious in some way (human, as above, or machine - spyware etc.). You can do this because when you use a proxy, the proxy makes the dns lookup.

 

Otherwise, your filter *should* be doing reverse DNS lookups, though this is mildly imperfect and adds a tiny bit of latency.
