Windows 2008 and 2008 R2 - End of Extended Support 14/01/2020

With the time it can take to migrate some programs and services (especially for those on 32 Bit 2008), I thought it would be wise to ensure this is on everyone's radar.

 

Currently standing at just under 21 months time, but we all know how long it could take to prepare some extensively used servers (and possible compatibility issues) or to get funding!

My major reservation with the cloud is when the Internet goes down... which happens more than I like.

Surely in this day in age you would have a backup internet connection? People have RAID, dual power supplies etc in servers so it would make sense to have backup connections.

Not in the Primary School, no, just a single FTTC connection.

We do have Fibre and an ADSL in the Secondary School though.

We're more likely to get a power cut than the internet down because it just failsover to another provider.

The internet is *SO* critical to teaching, learning and administration that we have to have the backup links anyway so moving servers offsite is just a bonus really.

To put it another way, a 1GB/s leased line backup to a (more distant) exchange costs the school a whopping 0.1% of it's annual budget. From my perspective it's a no-brainer.
