PCI-E 1x card in a PCI-E 8x or 16x slot?

Does anyone know if this will work?

 

I want to buy a TV-Tuner card and the one I want is a PCI-E 1x form factor, but it is quite long.

 

I have one PCI-E 1x slot on my motherboard, but the northbridge heatsink has a heatpipe coming out of it which would prevent the card from being seated properly.

 

So, can I use the PCI-E 1x based card in one of my free PCI-E 8x or 16x slots?
