Delete root SharePoint site O365

Dear all,

 

See below.

 

We have some users saving to the default/root SharePoint site in our O365 tenant. I would like to disable/delete/hide it.

 

- We've disabled the ability for users to create their own sites, but we're unsure if any other sites have already been created; is there an easy way of seeing this?

- Is the recommended?

- Has anyone done anything on this before that could advise?

You've probably discovered this by now, but just incase someone else finds it helpful:

 

The answer to your first question is "kind of." You can view created sites under the Groups section in the admin center (the two people icon). User created groups are tagged as Office 365, for easier filtering. Groups are automatically created for a number of functions (i.e. for teams, plans, sharepoint, etc.). From the admin page you can add yourself as a member if you desire more information about a particular group. It does take awhile for this to take effect. . . .

Apologies, I should have updated this. Yes, you can restrict the root site via permissions and it doesn't effect subsequent sites.

 

To do this, visit the root site http://[tennantname].sharepoint.com , click on the cog in the top right (as long as you are a global administrator) / site settings / site permissions. I added another administrator group to 'Team site owners' as none were listed and didn't want to lock myself out, but once that's done you're safe to delete the other groups that are listed.
