Take ownership of a "Place" on Facebook

There is a "place" on Facebook for our school. To be clear, this isn't a profile which someone is maintaining, just one of those (I think automatically created) "public places" which you can tag in posts. We'd like to take ownership of this so we can moderate if necessary (or delete it, not sure which yet). All the help pages I can find say to click on a gear icon or on "is this your business?" and claim it. Unfortunately, those options aren't there, so I suspect someone else has already claimed it for us. Does anyone know how I go about this?

The best option i found was if your school has an official page then get it verified, that way your page will show in results first, eventually the other one will dissapear as it doesn't get any hits or views.

This is what we did. Get your page verified and then the anyone going to the other page gets redirected automatically.

That's the funny thing. The page still says "unofficial" on it, but doesn't have the "is this your business?" link on it, so I don't think I can get it verified

You create a new page and then get that one verified. Report the other page as a duplicate link. Get a few people to do this. As traffic builds up on your page the other one gets redirected to yours.

Thanks. It seems, like you, ours is the wikipedia-generated one not from check-ins (which would explain why it has our website and phone number on it). So our only option is to set up a school page and then merge them? What if we don't want a school Facebook page??

I don't think you have an option of not having a Facebook page. You either let the wikipedia-generated one carry on as it is or you take control of the School presence on Facebook.

True. The HT doesn't want to run a Facebook page, but at least this would give us control of the page that is up there.

I hardly ever put anything on ours but I see people use it to 'check-in'. We use the privacy settings to control what visitors can do on the page.

I see from your other thread check-ins are the way to get the page ranking higher - maybe to encourage this we could do registration via Facebook check-ins for a week!

That's our primary concern too, in case anyone tags the school in inappropriate posts.

I'm not winning here. I've now created an official Facebook page for the school, but I'm not able to merge the Wikipedia-generated page with the school one. I've found the "merge pages" option within settings, but it says I have to be an admin of both pages, which of course I'm not.

 

I also don't have the option to verify my new page and get the little grey tick, either.

Forget about merging the pages as that won't work, focus on verifying your page and let the rest take care of itself. as more people like the official page and traffic builds all users will be redirected to the official page. the link below should help when wanting to verify a page

I can't do the page verification over the summer holidays, as they want to call the main school number which currently kicks straight to answering service.

 

Traffic won't build on the official page, as we don't intend to use it - I've only set one up as I had been told this would allow me to merge the other page so I could have control of our social media presence.
