Basically we're looking at stacking the switches in the cabs to get the best possible core network speed from them. We have two models of switches a Cisco 2960X and 2960S both of which use different stacking modules. My question is whether or not we can mix 2 separate models when stacking them? So stack the X to the S! I have looked all over and have found conflicting opinions with some people saying it should be fine and others saying definitely not so I don't have a clue if it's ok to do or not! If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it! Thanks

FN-GM Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 As long as they are both using Lan Base. Plus I think you can only stack a maximum of 4 when you involve the 2900S. Make sure they are running them version of the IOS.
abillybob Posted March 26, 2018 Author Posted March 26, 2018 Thanks both. What is LAN Base? I've installed the same IOS version on each switch is that what it means? Also I have stacked some 2960x switches, 4 of them together which are working fine but when I do a 'show run' command the first 4 switches are correct but then it also thinks there's another 2 switches installed but they're not there? Basically it has made up two switches so shows 6 being in a stack when there's actually only 4, it even shows the ports present when you do a show run. Adding them to cisco network assistant doesn't show these 2 additional switches only on Putty? Really strange.
FN-GM Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 If you do a show version and past the output I can tell you if you're on LAN base or not. If you do a show switch, you can see the switches that are absent. You can delete them by running: No Switch

kmount Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Did you include the number of the switch on the end of the command? "no switch 5" (e.g. to remove switch 5)

I have an issue where I have downloaded the .tar file from Cisco for the 2960s models but they won’t update? I’m doing it through the browser under maintenance - software update, it just hangs at “loading tar image” I’ve tried loads of different browsers! Is there anyway I can update them via command line??
