Group Policy Deploy Printer – Create, Replace, Update and Delete

Hi All,

 

I am looking for some advice. We currently have printers deployed through GP. These printer are due to be replaced with new printers.

 

Which would be the best way to deploy the new printers?

 

I was thinking about using the same IP addresses and the same group policy and just change the shared printer path in GP. I will keep the Action as Update, which it currently is.

 

Am I currently heading towards the right direction? Or do I need to assign new IP’s to the printers and create new policies to deploy the new printers. With the old printers change the policy for Action to Delete so the old printers are deleted then after a while remove the policy for the OU.

You should be able to Set a GPO to Delete all printers then add your New one's shoudl be no reason why you can't use the same IP.

Do I modify the current Printer Policy so the Action is DELETE, so this policy will delete all old printers. Then create new Printer Policies to deploy new printers.

Yes make a Backup of that Policy Then Make the Action delete and Set up the new one's

I Would test it on 1 PC First, Change it to Delete, Check if it has deleted the Printer, Re-Add your Old IP's back and check again it should have added them? if they wok then you know it can be pushed out.

We have a multiple subnet campus with users switching between the two sites. We push out printers with gpo with targeting done within the gpo to a specific iprange.

 

As such our gpo for the printers deletes all printers and then assigns them depending on what ip range the PC that they log onto is in.

 

This has worked flawlessly until the windows 10 upgrade.

I've found the 'Delete All' method slows logins, as your re-installing printers you just deleted a lot of the time (Especially if you have follow me printing). We deploy the printers based on rules (Location, member of etc). Then copy that printer and open up the properties. Change your 'If' statements to 'If Not' and set it to delete.

 

That way, you only delete a printer if the rules no longer match (IE student logs in, staff printer is removed). Makes logins a while lot quicker.
