enjay Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 Our students have found you can watch Youtube videos by searching with DuckDuckGo then clicking to "play the video here" rather than going to Youtube itself. Any ideas how to stop this? Following advice on a thread about image searches, I blocked images.duckduckgo.com/iu but that just stopped the thumbnails coming up, if you click on the non-displayed thumbnail the video still comes up. I think it's doing a Google Safesearch so the videos you can get aren't too bad, but I'd still like to block them anyway.

enjay Posted March 7, 2018 Author Posted March 7, 2018 We have DuckDuckGo on our "make sure it's blocked list" I did consider that, and would have done it if I couldn't find a cleaner solution, but I thought blocking the entire search engine because of this misuse was overkill (even though the only reason the student was using DuckDuckGo was because of this loophole!)

Even when I set the safesearch to off, I only got safe results (even to some quite fruity search terms!). You could block images.duckduckgo.com/iu too, that stops the thumbnails in image searches from loading 1

Our utm safe search only seems to support the main search engines, Google, Bing yahoo etc Didn't know that i could have used that option. Thanks for the info. We're happy with just blocking duckduckgo site wide as we're a Google site so set that as our first search engine option.

We're a Google school too, but part of me likes the idea of reminding people there are other search engines. That said, these students were only using it because it bypassed (note the past tense!) our filters so maybe I should have just blocked the whole site and moved on with my life...
