Students creating their own Google Classrooms

Couldn't see a safeguarding forum so posted here.

 

We have come across students who are creating their own google classrooms outside of our domain. It seems that Google Classroom now allows anyone to join Google Classroom as long as they are over 13 years of age. They are using these classrooms for their own private chats.

 

Anyone else come across this? Doesnt seem to be a way we can stop them.

 

They use IE11 to do this so do not sign into Chrome so the new settings shown here http://www.edugeek.net/forums/internet-related-filtering-firewall/191496-new-google-chrome-feature-windows-force-users-sign-browser.html do not apply.

 

Safeguarding issue?

I am not sure what you think is an issue? Surely this is no different to a student setting up, at home, a blog/personal website/forum whatever?

This is more of a behaviour issue as it would look like the students are using Google Classroom to the teacher but in fact have their own private chat going using the Classroom stream.

I see that that would be a problem if the classroom was a classroom within the schools domain, but these would be nothing to do with the school. It is then simply a matter of classroom management by you and/or the teacher. If you were really unhappy you could block the url. Edited February 21, 2018 by lyricalway

Looking at using Smoothwall content modification and restricting Google logins to our domain only.
