Opening Smart Notebook files from One Drive or Sharepoint

If a teacher tries to open a notebook file directly from OneDrive or sharepoint they get the message "The file C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Temp\Smart Technologies\Smart Notebook\temp files\(random numbers).notebook cannot be opened" If we "show in explorer" the files open without issue. If I navigate to the location indicated I can find the filename and run it successfully. I get the same error when logged on as an administrator, so I doubt it's permission related. Any ideas?

Are you using IE? Do you get the same issue if you use, for example, Chrome? We had something similar where IE was doing 'mime sniffing' to determine what type of file a .notebook file was rather than relying on the extension. IE was identifying it as a zip file (which it is) and although I can't remember the exact details, this was causing issues downloading .notebook files from Sharepoint. I think this was fixed by changing a registry key. I remember there being lots of Google results if you search for IE and Mime Sniffing.

Yes, IE. Chrome downloads the file when clicked, and then requires clicking on it to open it, but it does open. Edited February 8, 2018 by clareq

I've turned off Mime sniffing in Internet options, but it still fails to open. Curiously, it tries to open twice, even though I'm only clicking once, each time giving the error that the file is in use and it is opening read only, before giving the error it can't be found.
