I'm looking to buying one for myself. I'm not wanting to spend the £999 on a Google Pixelbook, but I would like a fairly capable Chromebook with Play Store compatibility, so happy for £400-£500.

The Asus Chromebook Flip C302CA-GU010 is a really nice Chromebook for £500.

 

Acer's Chromebook R13 is also good, although the keyboard isn't as nice to type on as the Asus above and it has a slower processor.

Thanks for that last nugget of information. It hadn't even occurred to me that these things have an end date for software updates, just as with Windows.

Good point! More software updates is always a good thing.

 

I would choose the C302CA over the R13 too.

 

Something I only found out today with my schools' R13s is if you stack one on top of another (closed) R13, the keyboard and trackpad stop working. I think it's due to the strong magnets in the hinge? Very strange!

With the C302CA, there are a few different versions, with the main difference being the process and RAM. The process options are the M3 and M7 and the RAM options are 4 or 8Gb. This changes the price from between £500 to £800!

How important to Chrome OS are these? I don't plan to play demanding games or anything on them, but I'd like them to be snappy.

The Core m3 C302CA gets an Octane benchmark score of 22500 (see link below) which is about twice as fast as @FN-GMs x360 Chromebook and quicker than all ARM-based Chromebooks. It should be very snappy!

For comparison, the Pixelbook gets a score of 29238 (similar to the Core m7 C302CA).

 

Personally I wouldn't spend £800 on the m7 version since the m3 is fast enough IMO and you're then getting quite close to the PixelBook price.

 

4GB RAM should be sufficient unless you are one of these people that regularly open tons of Chrome tabs (~50-100+)?
