Is redirecting folders to mapped drives bad? If so, why?

Is it bad to redirect the Documents folder using a GPO to the mapped drive of the user home directory?

 

I seem to remember reading something that said that, but I can't find it, nor can I find anything which might explain why it's bad (if it's bad).

 

Currently we're using the "redirect to home folder" setting which actually redirects to the user's UNC path, and some software doesn't like that.

 

So I was wondering if it would be safe for us to set it to %HOMEDRIVE% so that their default save location shows up as U:\ instead of the UNC path?

I remember now, Adobe has similar issues, maybe give %HOMEDRIVE% a try and see if it works

Fair play, just tried it now and it works for my test OU, may deploy it site as we were having issues with Adobe CS6 and UNC paths on occasion

We use both sorts ironically, staff are on the %homedrive% sort, and students are unc, but never had problems with either on our softwares etc.

 

If software doesn't like a direct unc path, we just use the N:\ map etc

Unity 3D, Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects are the main ones I believe.

 

With Premiere Pro one of the issues that's been reported is when they save a project to a UNC path, if they then open it through Explorer using the mapped U:\ drive it has to relink all the files that are part of the project or something - I'm hoping that switching to a drive letter redirect might cure this issue.
