SpaceInvader83 Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 Hi, Just after a bit of advice/recommendations, when i next get some free time i'm going to replace our current DC's with clean build 2016 servers, ideally i'd like to reuse the same IP for the DNS servers. Is this really bad practice? Am i best just using new IP's and fixing up everything point to the old DNS servers? Thanks, Simon
NB9457 Posted January 16, 2018 Posted January 16, 2018 I used the old IPs and have had no issues. Just did on DC at a time, so took the old one offline, built the new one, brought it online, transferred roles, killed the old ones and then added a secondary. 6 months on, still ticking away. I went from Server 2008 to 2012 R2 1
k-strider Posted January 17, 2018 Posted January 17, 2018 That is what ive done since 2003 all the way up to 2016... Prepare new Virtual DC.... remove any FSMO roles from old one... dememote old one... remove old one from Domain.... rename new one to the same name as the one its replacing.. set ip settings to the same... add to domain... promote..... all in all it takes about an hour max 1
SpaceInvader83 Posted January 17, 2018 Author Posted January 17, 2018 Excellent - just as i'd hoped! Thanks both
