Raspberry Pi Music Streamer/Amp

Following a conversation with friends over a drink earlier in the week bemoaning the fact that dedicated MP3 streaming boxes are still relatively expensive if you want one to connect to your existing HiFi setup via the amp.

Yes, you can buy a cheap Bluetooth connector to go in straight via the amp, but Ideally I'd want something that talked to my NAS and phone.

One of our group said he'd heard of one that you can make with a Raspberry Pi and it also came with a DAC.

Now, this sounded interesting! And, after a little digging around, it turns out to be true

It's called RuneAudio - Turn your Raspberry Pi into a music player - and you can use small, cheap dedicated DAC's that plug straight onto the GPIO.

There are a few others, but I think this is a little project I'm going to dig my teeth into after Bett

 

You can see how it all works on the video below but i don't think I'll be using a dedicated display but use a phone or tablet to control it.

Looks interesting, a quick look on the website doesn't mention any app for phones or tablets, but you can do this with kodi, so that's another option for you to explore

So, for a total of around £66 you can have a streaming DAC player. Bargain!

Looks quite cool and we are geeks, so maybe the making is more important than the result, but....

 

If you want something that just works, give Chromecast Audio a go. Plugs straight into the back of an amp or you can use the built in Toslink optical digital out to go via your choice of DAC.

 

You can stream from the local network or the streaming services. RRP is £30, but I bought (all five of) mine on offer for between £15 and £20. The multi-room feature is excellent [emoji41]
