Sender Verification in Exchange 2003?

Hi all,

 

We're having a problem with exchange, we need sender verification enabled. I've been into exchange system manager but am I struggerling to locate it.

 

The problem is we're send an email to someone externally, and it'll bounce back - as they've got sender verification setup and their server has reported back to our server to verify the address, but it is not being verfiried.

 

So the email just bounces back.

In System Manager, try Global Settings | Internet Message Format | Default | Advanced. There are some settings in there.

Brighton uni has a section at Sender Address Verification which explains what they do - I'd guess many other places do the same.

 

Allowing this is required by the RFC and Exchange does it by default so I'd guess you're OK there (but try the example they give to confirm).

 

Is it possible that they're using "Sender Policy Framework"? this basically checks each email to make sure that the server is listed in your DNS as allowed to send mail for your domain.

 

For example, if you do

nslookup -q=txt  cnwl.ac.uk

then you should get back our spf record which basically says "accept mail from ****@cnwl.ac.uk if it comes from IP 195.194.12.0/28"

 

If you don't have SPF then it's worth configuring it in your DNS - it's pretty easy to do and will help some of your mail to get delivered.
