creating website for DT

Just been having an intresting chat with the DT department about creating an internal website for their department. the ideas we shot back and forth:

 

youtube style videos of how to make diffrent wood joints, use machinery, tools, etc

 

good examples of protfolios in pdf format

 

images of year 11 final work

 

info about health and saftey, diffrent materials etc

 

search facility

 

 

 

Ive never made a website before, and figured this would be a good opportunity to do one and then i can stick it on my cv

 

Im going to use joomla, makes sense.

 

anyone have sugestions on how i should go about doing this? what would be best module to stream videos youtube style etc.

I think if you did them in flash then that would be easy enough to embed...

the two DT teachers are going to have fun with it by dressing up for it. i.e mad professor style, wigs, tash etc. camtasia would have done the trick.

I created a site with Joomla and the advice I have is to create the static content first (XHTML/CSS) as a mockup for the site, then drop in the Joomla PHP to make it dynamic.

 

With regards to streaming media, have a look at Flowplayer.org which provides very simple video embedding. Someone else may have a better idea for Joomla specific streaming media though.

We use Joomla for our intranet, its basically a Joomlapack backup droped onto our interanl webserver run though the install and just edited all the stuff thats not needed and changed the colour theme, there is a number of joomla video addons I use Allvideos here it is in action.

I came across this the other day, whilst looking for ideas THS Video Channel and it uses Seyret Video Component. Looks nice for what you want it too do, but could be overkill.

 

The builtin Joomla search is good enough for what you want.

I would use remository or docman for the pdf's
