External HDD shows as RAW over USB but is fine using SATA?

Morning All,

 

I have acquired a 1GB Buffalo external HDD that shows as a RAW file system over USB 3.0 but taking it out of the housing and interfacing via SATA allows me to access the drive with no issue!? I have tried a known to be good cable too.

 

Could it be the SATA to USB 3.0 header that is borked?
